Don’t call us, we’ll call you

45 minutes — how often Addison woke up on Tuesday night.

20 minutes — how often Addison woke up last night.

Is it teething?  Hunger?  Digestion issues?  Who knows.

We do know one thing from our observations the last few nights.  Now that she can sit up and crawl around with such ease, she seems to be startling, and then instinctively rolling onto her stomach, getting on hands and knees, and sitting upright . . . all in a matter of seconds.  Once sitting, she opens her eyes for a second, looks surprised, and then bursts into piteous tears and screams.  It would be really funny if she weren’t so distraught about it (and it weren’t happening multiple times per hour).  We get a little frustrated at times, but from her perspective, I can see how distressing it would be to be minding your own business, sleeping softly, only to find that you are suddenly sitting up for no apparent reason.

So two questions:

  1. Will you pray for sleep for us???
  2. Do they make little baby straightjackets (ones that preferably strap to the crib mattress as well)?

  1. How old is she? I swaddle mine until they wiggle out between 6-9 months and I’m a crazy swaddler so let me know if you want tips. Seriously, when the nurses in L&D would swaddle my baby I’d unswaddle it and do it my way, I’m that crazy about it 🙂 At least she isn’t crawling out of bed, I’ve heard of tricks to keep them in too which are more humorous then useful. Good luck and I’ll remember you guys tonight.

  4. We’ll pray for you! I wish she would start sleeping for you! That must be miserable. Good luck with the strait jacket hunt 😉

  5. I saw a large swaddle in Babies R Us on clearance for $5 and I almost bought it (yesterday). It may still be there. We loved ours… it has the velcro on it that keeps it in place.
Beth does that too… we usually just go in and once we lay her back down, she starts sucking her thumb and she’s out again. If we try to hold her ’til she stops, she keeps crying.
I hope it gets better!! Mommies and daddies need sleep too!! 🙂

  6. Oh, I just looked at that website that Kei020003 posted and it’s the swaddle I was talking about. Except it’s probably not organic, which is why it’s only $5. But it’s pink. 🙂

  7. Oh man, it’s Toys R Us, not Babies R Us. If you go into the clearance section at the back of the store, it’s on the right, a little above eye level, like 10 feet down the row.

  8. I will pray for you certainly! Camden does this too, though, not nearly as often nor throughout the entire night. I am hoping, for your sake, it is simply a phase. A short phase. In fact, I’m sure it is something related to her physical well-being/comfort. If you need a break, I can certainly get Camden and me over there so you can take a nap.

We have some music Camden enjoys so when it happens, Devin goes in (I do not because he will just scream harder–probably because I can’t resist picking him up and Devin can, so he’s used to Devin NOT getting him and will settle much more easily) turns on the music quickly, lays him back down, and goes right out. Works well for us, but he’s always been in the habit of listening to music to settle himself before sleeping. I hope something works for you. But if it doesn’t, again, know I am willing and able to come on over so you can rest! Good luck and our prayers are continuously with you!

  9. We will pray for you! Eliza isn’t sleeping through the night but she is doing better than that! She still sleeping in a swaddle. She can’t fall asleep without it unless she is in her car, and that only happens rarely. We have lots of swaddle blankets if you want one… I am serious… we have a lot!

  10. thank you for the laughing tears again! 🙂 I know every mother has wished for a straight jacked that connects to the sheets at one point or another. . .currently I would like one for my 11 year old, 7 year old, and 5 year old who all think they’re big enough to choose when to get in bed and stay there!

  11. Sad to say that I think if you want her to sleep through the night she has to learn how to put herself to sleep without you there to help her. This sometimes means letting her cry it out. Usually that only lasts a couple heart renching nights and then you’re home free!! Eliza is only 2 1/2 months, but she already sleeps through the night, 8 hrs, and I can put her in her crib an walk away and she falls asleep on her own. By addisons age babies should be sleeping 12 hrs straight through the night!!!
